Editing routes with the route planner
This guide will explain how to edit your routes and route information.
Editing/Adding Route Information
When you open one of your routes, it will open in the route detail view. Here you will be able to see the route and view it in different map styles etc. You will also see the route statistics and be able to edit all the meta data associated with the route. That includes:
1. Changing the Name
Clicking Edit will allow you to change the name of your route (the name must be between 5 and 160 characters long).
2. Add Photos
You can add up to nine photos by pressing the Add Photos button (if you have already added photos to the route, you need to press the edit button to add more). You can delete a photo by pressing the bin icon.
3. View Route Statistics
You can see all the stats of your route and the elevation graph below your photos. Hovering over the graph with your mouse will make the distance markers appear on the route and tell you the elevation for a specific point.
4. Manage the privacy of your route
Pressing Edit here allows you to manage the privacy settings of the route.
Private is the default setting for newly created routes and means it will only be visible to you. By setting the route to public, it will be viewable by the Bikemap community.
5. Share or embed the route.
If your route is set to public, you can press Share to send a link to your friends or Embed to enable you to show your Bikemap routes on your website.
6. Add a description
You can add a description to provide further information about the route.
7. Add bike and surface type
You can add if the route is suited to a road bike, mountain bike or city bike and if the route contains paved, unpaved or gravel surfaces. You can select more than one.
8. Print route
You can print your created route. Find out more here.
9. Download as GPX/KML file
You can download your route as a GPX or KML file for use on other navigation devices and websites.
10. Delete route
If you want to delete your route, you can do so. There is no undoing this action.
11. Add route to one of your collections
By pressing the Add to... button, you can add your route to one or more of your collections by ticking the boxes. You can also add a new collection directly from this menu.
12. Add Points of Interest
You can add as many Points of Interest your route as you want. To do this, simply click on a part of the map and press Add Highlight. From here you can add a description, photo and choose which category the highlight belongs in. You can choose between four categories:
- Point of Interest
- Photo/viewpoint
- Drinking Water
- Accomodation
- Bike Service
Editing the Route
Now you know all the functionality available in the route viewing screen. By pressing the Edit Route button, you go into edit mode where you can change the path of your route or redraw it completely.
More tips for planning can be found in this article. But in this section we will go into detail about how to edit your existing route effectively, using the dragging and control point functionality.
Way & Control Points
Waypoints
When editing a route you can add extra waypoints to your route. This will edit the route to include the newly added waypoint. You can do this by right clicking on a point on the map and either choosing Set Destination or Add to Route. It works something like this:
The newly created waypoint will be added to the address list on the left hand side and will show as a marker on the route denoted with a letter (A-Z).
Control Points
Control points on the other hand are a softer version of waypoints. They help lock the route in place but won't appear as an address in the list. They do not remain after saving.
You can add them by clicking on the route line and they will show up as a white circle. You can delete them by clicking on them again.
They are important as they can help you to create segments that you can then edit. This makes sure only the chosen route segment is edited when dragging the route line and not the whole route. This is particularly important for loop routes.
The route segment that will change is the part of the line that is highlighted when your mouse is on the route line.
Segments & Editing by Dragging
Segments of the route are the sections between control and/or waypoints. You can create more segments by adding more way or control points to the route as detailed above.
Creating segments are an important part of the editing process, as when editing you will likely want to change just a small part of the route and not the entire thing.
Segments are highlighted when you scroll your cursor over the route line as shown in the picture below.
The most common way to edit your route will be to drag the route line with your mouse (by holding your click and moving the line to where you want it).
In the picture above, the highlighted route segment is the section that will change when you drag the line. The video below shows a good example of how it all works.
If you are experiencing that dragging or adding a waypoint changes too much of the route, you need to add more control points to the route.
Editing by Changing Addresses
Instead of dragging the route line, you can also keep the editing simple by either entering the address of new waypoints or changing addresses in the list.
Using the Route as a Template/Copying the Route
There are two ways to do this now. You can either simply edit a route as normal and then instead of clicking Save Changes, you can press Save Copy. This will save the edited route as a new route whilst also keeping the old one.
The other way to do this is when on the route detail view. From here you can click anywhere on the map and press Copy Route.
If the route is NOT yours, you can copy it and make it yours by pressing the Copy button when viewing the route.
