Multi-Day Tour Planner
This article will provide all information you need on how to create and manage your multi-day tours.
A tour is a type of route collection. A collection automatically becomes a tour if these conditions are met:
- The end of each route is within 2km (1.2 miles) of the start of the next one.
- There are a minimum of 2 and maximum of 20 routes in the collection.
You can find out more about tours here.
Our multi-day tour planner takes this a step further and helps you plan a long trip with up to 20 stages with the aid of some helpful tools
Creating Your Multi-Day Tour
To do this; you should begin by setting the start and end destination of your tour here or start planning a route as you normally do (web only). If your route is longer than 80km (50 miles), you will be given the option to create a multi-day tour by clicking on the banner shown below.
Alternatively you can click the 3 dots next to the save button and press 'Split into stages'.
Once you click one of these buttons, the planner will divide your tour into stages for you. You can use our tools to make adjustments to the lengths of each stage. You can set:
- The preferred rough length of the stages (max 20 stages).
- You can further optimise the stage lengths for you by setting how elevation gain should affect them. You can choose between 3 options:
- Gentle; Stages with high ascent are much shorter.
- Moderate; Stage lengths are influenced by ascent and descent moderately.
- Sportive; Ascent and descent have little impact on stage lengths. After setting what you want here, you can press continue and your multi day tour will be created for you.
- Change the start and end point (previous or subsequent stages will then be adjusted accordingly).
- Add waypoints.
- Change the preferred routing option for that stage or combine multiple routing options in one stage (for example from balanced to road bike).
- Delete the last or first stage of the tour (you can't delete stages in the middle as it will break the tour).
Adding Stages Manually
If you want to create a tour completely manually and without the stage splitting tool, you can. To do this, you can press the 3 dots next to save route when planning (this only appears when the route is longer than 20km). From here you can press 'Use as stage one'. Then you will be taken straight to the tour planner where you can add more stages from there.
Booking Accommodation via the Map
We now have a booking.com map layer which means you can book your accommodation directly via Bikemap (We receive a small commission when you do this, which helps us greatly).
Once you click on an accommodation, the below info screen will pop up which will show you the name, the rating, the address and photos of the place.
From here you can:
- Integrate it into your route
- Save it to your tour plan
- Go to booking.com and book it
- Share it with others
Integrating Accommodation into Your Tour
Once you have clicked on the map icon, you can click on the 3 dots and have the option to add it to your route (as an intermediate waypoint), set it as the start point or set it as the destination.
Integrating it into your route will automatically add it to your tour plan when you look at the overview and in edit mode (see pictures below)
Saving to Your Tour Plan Manually
If you do not want to integrate the accommodation into the route but want to save it so it shows whilst planning and in the overview, you can press the 'Save' button in the accommodation pop up.
FAQs
Is the tour planner free?
The Multi-Day Tour Planner is completely free to use. However, some features like some routing options, exporting, and advanced map layers require a Bikemap Premium subscription.
Does the planner work on mobile devices?
The full planner is available on web. Once saved, your tour and stages automatically sync to the Bikemap app, where you can view, navigate, and edit them on the go.
Can I export the full tour to my GPS device?
Yes, each stage of your tour can be exported as a GPX or KML file. This lets you use your route with GPS bike computers, third-party apps, or mapping tools. If you connect Bikemap to Garmin or Wahoo the export will be handled automatically.
How does the elevation setting affect the stage planning?
When splitting your route into stages, you can choose between three elevation settings: Gentle, Moderate, and Sportive. These options control how much influence ascent and descent have on stage lengths.
For example, if you select Gentle, the planner will create shorter stages in hilly sections to avoid overloading a single day with too much climbing. Sportive allows for longer, more challenging stages with more ascent.
Can I change my stages after saving?
Yes, your tour stays fully editable. You can adjust stage endpoints, add or remove waypoints, and update routing profiles at any time. Changes are automatically synced to your account.
Can I print my entire tour?
Currently, you can print each stage individually. This allows you to include detailed zoomed-in views and highlight important segments for each day of your ride.
