Planning routes with the route editor
Bikemap’s route editor allows you to create and edit cycle routes. In the following you will find detailed instructions on how to get the most out of this tool.
Drawing the route
Once you open the route editor you will see a map centered around your current approximate position. In case you would like to create the route in a different area you can change the map section with your mouse or use the search bar on the top left to search for a place or an address.
Click on any point in the map to mark the starting point of your route. By adding more route points to the map you set the course of your route. In the route editor you can find a toolbar on the left. It contains two different tools that you can use to draw your route:
- The magnet tool calculates the best route between two route points.
- The line tool allows you to draw the route by hand. By pressing the pencil icon you can switch to that tool with which you can choose the exact way regardless of roads and paths.
Editing the route
If you want to change the course of the route click on one of the route points and move it by dragging and dropping it to the position of your choice. You can also click on the blue line of the route and drag it to any spot. You will add an additional route point by doing so. You can delete a route point by clicking on it.
If you want to delete more than one point at a time, choose the eraser icon and mark an area in the map with your cursor. All points within this area will get deleted.
Additionally you will find the following tools in the toolbar:
Circuit tool: With this tool the first and last point of your route will get connected. Choose either “Use shortest path” or “Take the same way back”.
Reverse tool: This tool will switch the start and ending point of the route and will adapt the course of the route accordingly.
POI tool: “Points of interest” (POI) can be added to the route using this tool. The POI can be placed by clicking on any spot in the map. You can choose between several categories for the POI, add a description and upload an image.
Other functions
In the route editor on the right hand side there are several map layers to choose from. There you will find a button to show/hide the Heatmap as well as the possibility to choose a map style different to the basic map. By pointing the cursor on the little blue arrow below, all map layers available will be shown. Find detailed information about the Heatmap and the various map styles in this article.
You can find the elevation profile by scrolling down in the details window on the right.
In this window you can also add a description and images to your route.
If you want you can choose the bike type and surface that best fit your route. These settings help you and other users searching for the proper route. They do not affect the course of the created route.
Saving the route
In order to save your route add a title to the text field on the right (optionally additional information about the route too) and press “Save route”. You will then find your saved route in the folder “My Routes” -> “Planned” on your profile.
